With more and more junior researchers trying to stay in academia, permanent academic positions are becoming increasingly competitive. At the same time, the number of permanent positions and professorships are stagnating. Faced with this situation, many young academics cannot – or choose not – to compete in the academic job market. On the other hand, a large percentage of doctoral candidates plan for a career outside academia from the onset of their doctorate.

This group, which constitutes the majority of recent doctoral candidates, faces questions such as: How do I find a job in government or industry? Which of my skills and experiences are most attractive to non-academic employers? How can I strengthen my profile to reach my goal?

In this seminar, we focus on strategies and individual perspectives for a successful transition from science to job opportunities outside academia.

The seminar aims at supporting participants in getting to know different career options in the public sector, industry, and business sector. Participants will be enabled to identify their personal interests and motives as well as to recognize their ‘market value’.

In addition to this seminar, participants are encouraged to register for a job application training and to attend career and job fairs.
